Architectural Shingles
Asphalt shingles offer versatile roofing options for homes. Three-tab shingles leverage its simple yet classic design to be a timeless choice but sometimes simple and classic just doesn’t cut it. If you’re interested in asphalt shingles but want something with a little bit more flair, put down those three-tab shingles and get to know architectural shingles.
Design
Three-tab and architectural shingles are similar in that they both come in a range of colors. But instead of a smooth, flat appearance, architectural shingles offer a more three-dimensional look. This gives a roof more character while harnessing the benefits of asphalt shingles, a bump up from the traditional design that three-tab shingles offer.
Anatomy
The biggest difference between a three-tab shingle and an architectural shingle is their thickness. The lower half of an architectural shingle is thicker and does not have any grooves or cuts on it. This also contributes to giving the shingle a more textured appearance, which translates to a roof beautifully.
Advantages
Because architectural shingles can resemble tile or slate, they serve as a more affordable alternative to higher-end roofing options. They will be more expensive than three-tab shingles but architectural shingles are perfect for those who want the affordability of asphalt shingles but are looking for something trendier for their homes.
Worried about matching your new roof to your home’s existing color scheme?
Don’t be! Architectural shingles are available in a range of colors as well, going anywhere from shades of brown and red to various hues of gray so there’s sure to be something for you.
Live in an area prone to strong winds?
Architectural shingles are thicker than their three-tab counterparts too so they are sturdier, making them less likely to get knocked off by strong winds. While they don’t shed water as well as three-tab shingle roofs, a properly installed architectural shingle roof should have no problems managing water runoff. And should repairs be needed, it’s easy to fix architectural shingles as well. They may be heavier than three-tab shingles but they offer the same ease in maintenance.
